Solid Waste Management is responsible for the collection and disposal of all solid waste within the City following State and Federal Laws. In an ongoing effort to reduce the amount of solid waste being disposed of in Memphis area landfills, Solid Waste Management has developed and supported a variety of materials management programs and initiatives which include: curbside recycling, yard waste composting, household hazardous waste disposal and recycling drop-off centers.

GARBAGE COLLECTION
Curbside garbage collection is a weekly service provided to City of Memphis residential customers. The Solid Waste Division provides one green cart for the disposal and collection of garbage. Garbage collection is part of your weekly solid waste service which includes recycling cart collection and up to two garbage bags of yard waste. Need more space? Remember residential customers can lease a second garbage cart for $10.00 each per month. The fee will be added to your monthly solid waste fee on your utility bill.
To prepare for weekly garbage pickup, please provide unobstructed access to your green cart at the curb by clearing vehicles, objects, or overhanging tree limbs. If your green garbage cart is not serviced on your regular collection day, call 3-1-1.
Make sure hot ashes, coals, concrete, rocks, large pieces of metal, tile, dirt, household hazardous waste (e.g., paint, oils, corrosives, batteries) are not inside or near your garbage cart.
RECYCLING COLLECTION
Curbside recycling collection is a weekly service provided to residential customers. The Solid Waste Division provides one 96-gallon gray cart for the collection of your single-stream recyclables. Recycling at home is an easy way to make a difference every day. And you can accomplish it by simply keeping all recyclables out of your green garbage cart. New products created from recycled materials, decrease our dependence on limited natural resources. Also, when we recycle, we prevent reusable materials from filling up local landfills where they become contaminated and cannot be extracted and reused. If your gray recycling cart is not serviced on your regular collection day or you need to request a recycling cart delivery, call 3-1-1.
YARD WASTE COLLECTION
Yard Waste collection is a weekly service provided to the City of Memphis residential customers. The Solid Waste Division collects up to one half a cubic yard of bagged yard waste debris a week. This waste must be organic only. It cannot include construction debris and must be placed in a separate pile at the curb. If your yard waste debris was not serviced, please check for a warning tag. This will explain the reason the collection was not picked up. Any further questions about your pickup, call 3-1-1.
OUTSIDE THE CART WASTE COLLECTION
Outside the Cart, collection is a bi-monthly service for City of Memphis residential customers. Twice per month on your regular collection day, the City will pick up your yard debris in excess of two bags and outside the cart bulk waste such as tree limbs and furniture. Your weekly garbage and recycle cart collection and up to two bags of yard waste will remain on a weekly collection schedule.

For your convenience, Solid Waste Fee paying customers can take up to one truckload of non-hazardous waste to the landfill each month. Click here to find the closest landfill to you. Make sure to have your latest MLGW bill and picture I.D. with you.
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
The City of Memphis supports the Shelby County’s household hazardous waste facility located at 6305 Haley Rd, Memphis, TN 38134.
CART LEASE PROGRAM
Residents of Memphis receiving City of Memphis solid waste services may now lease additional City-issued 90-gallon garbage carts for $10.00 each per month. The fee will be added to your monthly solid waste fee on your utility bill.
Solid Waste Fee Discount Program
Solid Waste Fee and Sewer Rate Discount Guideline
Provides discounted rates for a portion of the MLGW utility bill that deals with solid waste and sewer fees for persons who are 65 and older and/or disabled and who meet income eligibility and other requirements. Applications take at least 45 days to process; after that time applicants may call the 3-1-1 Call Center to inquire about their application status.
City of Memphis Solid Waste Fee and Sewer Rate Discount Application
Complete and return the Solid Waste Fee and Sewer Rate Discount Application provided by the City of Memphis Public works, with the needed documentation; print off the application and guidelines for eligibility from the website.
Applications can be mailed in, but MUST Be Notarized; if applications are brought in person, they do not have to be notarized and can be turned in by either the applicant or by the applicant’s power of attorney.
