Law

The Law Division, or City Attorney’s office, for the City of Memphis is headed by the Chief Legal Officer, Jennifer A. Sink, and is assisted by deputy and assistant city attorneys and other staff.

The Law Division serves a number of vital functions for City government. Staff attorneys work in two basic areas: contracts and litigation. City attorneys working on contracts provide counsel, oversight and review of the thousands of contracts annually. City attorneys working in the litigation area are responsible for defending lawsuits filed against the City, prosecuting violations of city ordinances, and prosecuting blight and nuisance claims. City attorneys provide legal assistance to all Divisions of government to facilitate operational needs and good government.

The Law Division also provides services through its Claims, Permits, Metro Alarms, Ethics, and Risk Management departments, and manages public records requests.
