The City of Memphis’ Division of Engineering is hosting an initial public input meeting to present multimodal safety and aesthetic improvements proposed through the Better Jefferson project. The project’s scope consists of a two-mile stretch of Jefferson Avenue from Front Street to Cleveland Street.
As a primary corridor from Downtown through the Medical District and to Midtown, City Engineering has targeted Jefferson Avenue for major upgrades. The proposed improvements will enhance the safety and experience along the street to create a “Better Jefferson” for all users. Over the last several months, Engineering and its consultants have developed preliminary designs that are now ready for public review and comment.
The mobility and traffic safety improvements will be funded using a combination of Federal and Local sources. In addition to resurfacing and striping, proposed improvements include sidewalk and ADA upgrades; enhanced pedestrian crossings; traffic signal modernizations; bicycle facilities; traffic calming; and landscaping elements.
At the virtual meeting on September 17 the design team will present the proposed improvements included in Better Jefferson. Residents, institutions, employers, and business and property owners are encouraged to attend the meeting and provide feedback on the proposed improvements. The virtual meeting will include a formal presentation, online polling, and a question and answer period.
