Residential Fires: E. Davant Avenue and W. Mitchell Road

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a house fire at 209 W. Mitchell Road, Friday, December 4, 2020 at 1:19 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported heavy smoke visible from the one-story wood-frame residential structure. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Fourteen (14) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately thirty-one (31)
emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Battalion Chief T. Gentry was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 1:37 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. Red Cross provided
assistance for three (3) adults. It has been determined that the residence did have a working smoke alarm. The structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $25,000.00 structure and $15,000.00 contents. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be careless use of smoking materials in bed.

Davant Avenue, Thursday, December 3, 2020 at 3:01 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported heavy smoke visible from the one-story wood-frame residential structure. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Thirteen (13) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately thirty-two
(32) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Division Chief D. Atkins was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at approximately 3:29 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. Red Cross provided assistance for two (2) adults. It has been determined that the residence did have a working smoke alarm which alerted the occupants and they escaped safely, prior to the arrival of fire crews. The structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $10,000.00 structure and $5,000.00 contents. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be faulty electrical wiring in the attic.

The Memphis Fire Department urges all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence. Check smoke alarms once a month and change the battery when you change your clocks. City of Memphis residents may apply for a free smoke
