Residential Fires: Coleman Avenue, Cypress Road, and Mud Island Drive

Coleman Avenue

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a house fire at 3233 Coleman Avenue, Friday, November 6, 2020 at 10:18 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported smoke visible from the one-story wood frame residential structure. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Fourteen (14) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately thirty-three (33)
emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Battalion Chief M. Till was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 10:30 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. During interior search procedures, fire crews found the family dog unresponsive in the kitchen area. They rescued and successfully resuscitated him. Red Cross provided assistance for four (4) adults. It has been determined that the residence did not have a working smoke alarm. The structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $20,000.00 structure and $7,000.00 contents. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be careless disposal of smoking materials in the bedroom.

Cypress Road

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a house fire at 3307 Cypress Road, Friday, November 6, 2020 at 10:57 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported smoke visible from the one-story wood frame residential structure. Thirteen (13) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately twenty-nine (29) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Battalion Chief S. Clark was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 11:05 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. Red Cross provided assistance for two (2) adults and two (2) children. It has been determined that the residence did not have a working smoke alarm. The structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $25,000.00 structure and $5,000.00 contents. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be accidental; a child playing with a cigarette lighter ignited combustible materials in the bedroom.

Mud Island Drive

The Memphis Fire Department responded to an alarm of fire at 57 Mud Island Drive, Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 7:02 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported heavy fire visible from the Mud Island Marina. Twenty-two (22) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately fifty-seven (57) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Division Chief D. Atkins was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 8:13 a.m. One firefighter was transported in non-critical condition to Regional One Burn Unit with 2nd degree burns to his hand. A sixty-six year old male sustained 2nd degree burns to his forearm. He was treated and released on the scene. The marina and seven (7) boats, including Memphis Fire & Police Catamaran sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at approximately $575,000.00 boats and $200,000.00 structure. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in the engine compartment of a boat docked in the marina.

The Memphis Fire Department urges all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence. Check smoke alarms once a month and change the battery when you change your clocks.
