Residential Fires: Brooklawn Drive, Claybrook Street, University Street

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a house fire at 8360 Brooklawn Drive, Monday, December 28, 2020 at 8:03 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported smoke visible from the two-story wood frame residential structure. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Eleven (11) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately twenty-seven
(27) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Battalion Chief M. Harris was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 8:14 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. It has been determined that the residence did have a working smoke alarm. The structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $10,000.00 structure and $5,000.00 contents. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be accidental; the stove left on and unattended ignited combustible materials in the kitchen. Red Cross assistance was not requested.

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a vacant house fire at 1084 N. Claybrook Street, Monday, December 28, 2020 at 12:28 p.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported smoke visible from the one-story wood frame residential duplex. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Sixteen (16) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately thirty-nine (39)
emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Battalion Chief C. Burton was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 12:35 p.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. The vacant structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $8,000.00 structure and no contents. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be intentionally set in the living room. This fire is still under investigation. The Memphis Fire Department responded to a house fire at 984 University Street, Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at 11:24 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported smoke visible from the two-story wood frame residential duplex. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately. Twelve (12) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately thirty-seven (37) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Acting Battalion Chief D. Lowrance was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 11:34 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. It has been determined that the residence did have a working smoke alarm. One (1) unit sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $5,000.00 structure and $2,000.00 contents. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be a toaster oven that malfunctioned in the kitchen. Red Cross assistance was not requested.

The Memphis Fire Department urges all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence. Check smoke alarms once a month and change the battery when you change your clocks. City of Memphis residents may apply for a free smoke
