City Winter Weather Update (2-5)

Closures:

These services are still impacted due to winter weather: Memphis Parks, Memphis Animal Shelter, Libraries, Community Centers (excluding warming centers), City Courts and City Clerk’s Office, Code Enforcement, ,City Treasury, Permits Office, Office of Business Diversity and Compliance, 311 and 211.

–Tax payments can be made online or by phone at 901-636-7200.

–The City’s Treasury Office also offers taxpayers a convenient drop box located in the Main Lobby at City Hall.

–The Division of Planning and Development will operate online only with no in-person appointments.

  • Public Works:

Road operations

185,000 tons of salt was applied to treat city roadways

Downed trees

432 downed trees were reported to OEM

255 trees have been cleared from city streets

177 total number of open service request

23 city crews are working to clear reported downed trees

Storm recovery is a continuous operation and the city is using all available assets to manage the server winter weather storm.

  • Traffic Engineering

54 Traffic light outages were reported to 311.

Safety Tips for Traffic Signal Outage:

–Traffic Signal Lights with outages should be treated as a four way stop.

–Flashing Red Lights should be treated as a stop sign.

–Flashing Yellow Lights – Drivers should proceed with caution only when traffic permits

  • MLGW:

— MLGW crews and assisting out of state utility company crews continue make progress to restore power.
— As of 7:45am, 84,754 customers are still without power. It may take several days for power to be restored in some areas.   

— Customers with power 79.67%

  • Respite Centers

City of Memphis, Office of Emergency Management, Shelby County Emergency Management and Homeland Security are joining with the American Red Cross and faith-based partners to open Respite Centers due to the extreme cold and extended power outages.   Respite Centers provide hospitality, a place to get warm, charge your phone or other devices, information and snacks.   

Respite Centers will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Warming Center: Hickory Hill Community Center (3910 Ridgeway Road, Memphis, TN 38115) 24 hour continuous operations

Hickory Hill Community Center- (Due to COVID precautions, all persons seeking entry into the center will be required to take a COVID test as well as adhere to social distancing guidance. Masking is strongly encouraged for all persons in the center. Those seeking overnight shelter accommodations are encouraged to seek assistance from our partners at:

• Memphis Union Mission located at 383 Poplar Avenue (901)-526-8403

• The Salvation Army located at 696 Jackson Avenue (901)-529-4545

• Additional shelters call (901) 529-4545

  • Community Centers

Senior Centers and Community Centers will be closed until power is restored.

  • Garbage, recycling and outside the cart collections:

Winter weather conditions continue to delay collections for some customers of the City of Memphis Solid Waste Division and its contractor Team Waste. Friday customers will be serviced with a one-day delay respectively. 

Customers are asked to present their carts on their normal collection day and leave until collected. Your patience is appreciated as we work to restore scheduled services as soon as possible.

Make sure your cart lids are completely closed to prevent tampering by pets and to block rainwater.  Excessive rainwater in your carts slows the workflow for Solid Waste crews.

  • Memphis International Airport:

Many airlines have canceled or delayed flights around the country due to snow and ice. Be sure to check your airline before heading to the airport. You can keep up with all MEM flight statuses on our website here https://flymemphis.com/flight-status/

  • MATA

Decisions regarding the level of service provided during an inclement weather event are made with the utmost regard for safety of our passengers and staff.   • Shelby Country Health Department

The COVID-19 drive-thru vaccination site at Southwest Tennessee Community College Whitehaven Campus at 1234 Finley Road will be closed Saturday, February 5th.
