City of Memphis winter weather update (2-16)

7 p.m. update

Closures:

Due to inclement weather, the City of Memphis will operate with only essential personnel coverage on Wednesday, February 17, until further notice.

As a result, the following services will be impacted: Memphis Parks, Memphis Animal Shelter, Libraries, Community Centers (excluding warming centers), Code Enforcement, Permits Office, City Treasury, Office of Business Diversity and Compliance, 311 and 211 will be closed. Tax payments can be made online or by phone at 901-636-7200. The Division of Planning and Development will operate online only with no in-person appointments.

The Office of Business Diversity and Compliance will host virtual appointments and workshops only (with no in-person visits). We are continuing to monitor the weather and road conditions, and will update the public again should there be any changes or additional closures.

MATA:

Effective tomorrow, the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) plans to only offer the following service:

1. Fixed-Route bus service will run between 5:15 a.m. and 6:45 p.m., but only on Routes 11, 28, 32, 42 and 50. These routes were selected based on current road conditions.

2. MATA plus will operate between 5 a.m. and 6:45 p.m., but only for life sustaining trips (this includes trips for dialysis) for customers who have reservations.

3. The William Hudson, Airways and American Way Transit Centers will remain open during service times only between 5:15 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. Please note that the Main Street, Riverfront and Madison Trolley lines will not operate.

Another severe winter storm is forecast for the Memphis area tomorrow so service may change again due to worsening inclement weather conditions. Please continue to pay attention to information being shared via Oilier, on the City of Memphis Next-door platform, on MATA Facebook and Twitter pages, and in the Service Alerts section of matatransit.com. You can also call MATA Customer Service at 901-274-MATA (6282).

MATA service will continue to be monitored throughout the day tomorrow based on inclement weather reports and road conditions. Another update will be shared tomorrow regarding service for Thursday, February 18.

Public Works:

City crews are working 16-hour shifts and have been running snow plows and sand trucks today. Snow and Ice Operations will continue for at least the next 72 hours.

This is a continuous operation.  The city is using all available assets to manage the sever winter storm including contracting for 6 additional snow plows for a total of 14 snow plow equipment.

Public Works Snow and Ice Operation incudes:

  • 6 Brine Units
  • 16 sand trucks
  • 14 snow plows

Warming Center:

There are three locations open at 7pm:     

  • Hollywood Community Center – 1560 N. Hollywood
  • Ruth Tate Senior Center – 1620 Marjorie Street
  • Lewis Senior Center – 1188 N. Parkway

Memphis Police Department is now under the Inclement Weather Crash Policy:

Drivers should, exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance information and tag numbers of the vehicles involved.

•Take photograph(s) of the damage and tag number of vehicles involved

•Both drivers should call the nearest Memphis Police Station or the Memphis Police Traffic Office to report the accident. This should be done within five (5) working days.

•An Officer or PST will complete a Crash Report or a “Non-Investigated Crash Report” (NIR).

Garbage, recycling and outside the cart collections:

Winter weather has impacted the ability of the Memphis Solid Waste Management Division and its contractor, Waste Pro, to safely deliver services. All solid waste collection services are suspended until conditions improve and can be delivered safely.

City of Memphis Solid Waste collections are suspended Wednesday, February 17. The City will monitor conditions and determine when collection services will resume safety. We will communicate further when information is available.

When services resume, customers are asked to place your carts at the curb on your regular collection day and leave them until they are collected

MLGW:

Currently (20) outages were reported in Memphis and Shelby County. Approximately (124) customers are without power and 99.97 percent of customers are with power. To report a power outage contact MLGW at 544-6500.

Shelby Country Health Department:

The following COVID-19 vaccination sites will be closed tomorrow, February 17, due to inclement weather and the threat of hazardous driving conditions:

  • Appling Inspection Station-2355 Appling City Cove
  • Pipkin Building – 940 Early Maxwell Road
  • Germantown Baptist Church – 9450 Poplar Avenue
  • Southwest Tennessee Community College Whitehaven Center – 1234 Finley Road
  • CSFP Warehouse – 1020 South Bellevue Blvd.

All appointments scheduled for Tuesday, February 16 – Saturday, February 20 will be rescheduled to a future date.

Next week, all partners, will be working diligently to get vaccine to the Shelby County community.

Updated information regarding closures will be posted on the www.shelby.community website.

7:30 a.m. update:

National Weather Service:

Another winter storm is expected to begin Tuesday night through Thursday.  Bitterly cold wind chill readings will continue through midday today. Wind chill readings will be below zero to as low as 15 below across the Mid-South.

Another winter storm will begin to affect the Mid-South as early as Tuesday evening with snow across Northeast Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel.

Significant snow, sleet, and freezing rain accumulations will spread across most of the Mid-South Wednesday and Thursday. Any accumulations on top of the snow and sleet already on the ground will exacerbate travel problems across the Mid- South.

Closures:

Solid Waste services will be suspended for the day. The Division of Planning and Development will operate online only with no in-person appointments. We are continuing to monitor the weather and road conditions, and will update the public again should there be any changes or additional closures.

MATA will resume limited service this morning and will continue to support OEM to transport to warming centers. Check www.matatransit.com for the latest details.

All public COVID-19 vaccination sites are closed tomorrow. Please look for updates from the Shelby County Health Department for when service will resume.

City Public Works:

Public Works are deployed this morning. The City is using all available resources to manage the severe winter storm including contracting for 6 additional snowplows for a total of 14 snowplow units.

Crews will remain active for at least the next several days working in 12-hour shifts. Public Works Snow and Ice Operation incudes:

14 snowplows

Residents are urged to stay home and keep off the roads unless absolutely necessary. If you must drive, please give yourself plenty of time to arrive to your destinations safely.
